Are They Certified and By Whom?
Trade Association Certification
Not all national home inspector professional associations are created equally. While many associations have basic requirements that "technically" meet the requirements of Pennsylvania home inspection law, they do so by requiring only the bare minimum of standards.
The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) and the National Association of Home Inspectors (NAHI) are the only two home inspector professional associations that set high standards for their members. These demand much more than the minimum required by law.
At HomePro every one of our property inspectors is a fully certified member of the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) or the National Association of Home Inspectors (NAHI).
ASHI is the oldest home inspection certification organization in the country with the most rigorous certification standards. Be sure your inspector is a "Fully Certified" member of ASHI, not just an "ASHI Candidate".
It can take many years to become "ASHI Certified". Each year many inspectors start the certification process as ASHI Candidates but are never able to meet ASHI's strict certification requirements. So ask to see a copy of your prospective home inspector's ASHI or NAHI Certificate and make sure it says "Certified ASHI or NAHI Member".
Also, watch out for associations that have similar sounding names. THESE ARE NOT THE SAME, and do not have the same rigorous standards for certification.
